The St Ives Feast will return to the Cornish resort on February 6th with the traditional hurling of the silver ball.

CORNWALL, ENGLAND, January 08, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The annual St Ives Feast could appeal to holidaymakers who are keen to experience some of Cornwall's ancient traditions.

Taking place on Monday February 6th 2012, this festival day celebrates the anniversary of the consecration of the parish church of St Eia in 1434.

It is notable as one of the few surviving events where the game of Cornish hurling is still played.

This robust sport of Celtic origin, also known as the hurling of the silver ball, is an old form of rugby that involves two teams competing to win possession of a cricket-sized wooden ball.

At the St Ives Feast, the game begins when the ball is thrown from the parish church on to the beach below at 10:30 GMT.

Participants then run through the streets of the town and attempt to win the ball from each other, with the victorious player returning the ball to the mayor at St Ives Guildhall for a reward of five shillings.

St Ives is one of two places famous for keeping the sport of Cornish hurling alive, with St Columb Major near Newquay also hosting annual games.

Visitors looking for places to stay in Cornwall will find a wide and varied selection at LateRooms.com, which recommends Upton House in Fowey for those who favour luxurious accommodation.
